The Kate Spade Story
Kate Spade was born Katherine Noel Brosnahan in 1962 in Kansas City, Missouri. She majored in journalism at Arizona State Universithy and was a menber of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.
In 1986, she moved to Manhattan and took a job in the accessories department of Mademoiselle, a very popular fashion magazine. She had become the senior fashion editor/head of accessories for Mademoislle by the time she left the magazine in 1991.
While reviewing fashion accessories for Mademoiselle she became convinced that the market lacked stylish and sensible handbags, so she began creating her own. She spent time at local flea markets researching different styles and fabrics, worked out production costs and then created a line of handbags with classic shapes, colors, and fabrics.
Kate had met her future husband, Andy Spade, while working for a men's clothing store while still at ASU, and the two married in 1994. In 1993, Kate and Andy started the store "kate spade handbags" and their reputation rapidly grew. In 1996 the Council of Fashion Designers of America awarded Kate "America's New Fashion Talent in Accessories" for her classic designs and in 1998, CFDA once again honored her for "Best Accessory Designer of the Year".
Kate Spade began expanding product lines until, today, the firm offers organizers, beauty and home products as well as clothing, shoes and eyewear to go along with the original designer handbags. In addition, the company has recently created "Jack Spade", the men's version of the Kate Spade brand and has rapidly become one of the most innovative design firms on the American scene today.
